Error Identifier: generics.callSiteVarianceRedundant

Every error reported by PHPStan has an error identifier. Here’s a list of all error identifiers. In PHPStan Pro you can see the error identifier next to each error and filter errors by their identifiers.

 * @template-covariant T
 */
interface Collection

/**
 * @param Collection<covariant string> $collection
 */
function doFoo(Collection $collection): void

Why is it reported? #

The call-site variance annotation (e.g. covariant or contravariant) on a generic type argument is redundant because the template type on the class is already declared with the same variance. In the example, Collection already declares T as @template-covariant, so writing Collection<covariant string> is unnecessary – Collection<string> has the same meaning.

How to fix it #

Remove the redundant call-site variance annotation:

 /**
- * @param Collection<covariant string> $collection
+ * @param Collection<string> $collection
  */
 function doFoo(Collection $collection): void
 {
 }

How to ignore this error #

You can use the identifier generics.callSiteVarianceRedundant to ignore this error using a comment:

// @phpstan-ignore generics.callSiteVarianceRedundant
codeThatProducesTheError();

You can also use only the identifier key to ignore all errors of the same type in your configuration file in the ignoreErrors parameter:

parameters:
	ignoreErrors:
		-
			identifier: generics.callSiteVarianceRedundant
